Gatorland in Kissimmee, FL is a throw back park to the 1950's and 1960's. It is nicely modernized for the kids of the 21st century complete with ziplines. What makes it unique however is the rookery that has developed around the alligator pond. With a boardwalk extending on the west side of the pond, the mangroves and bushes have turned into a very secure nesting area for a plethora of wading birds. Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Tri-Color Herons, Anhinga, Cormorants, and Wood Storks all coexist more or less and breed in highly visible and accessible nests for easy and wonderful photography. The park has accommodated this unique asset with a photographers early access program on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and an evening after-hours shoot on Saturday. The $20 fee is reasonable and the opportunities during spring breeding season are not to be missed. See the Gatorland website of specific information, rules, and point of access to the rookery on those specials days.
